Where. To. Begin.?
I’m not sure how much detail I should put into this, but since it is my blog and I want to remember this story forever and ever, I’m going to put as much detail as possible!
I know I’ve told part of this in a previous post, but I’m going to expand on it. If you’re not interested in this story, don’t read it, but feel free if you’re interested!
So, last week, I had seen people posting pictures of themselves with Tom and I was so envious! I wanted to learn more information on how people were getting this pictures, so I joined Tumblr since that’s where the information seemed to be coming from. It didn’t occur to me that after his tweets when he would send #Detroit, it meant that he was actually in Detroit, haha. I can be thick-headed sometimes…
I live in the suburbs of Chicago, a 5 hour drive to Detroit, but I didn’t care. I had to find a way to get there. How many chances do you get to meet one of your favorite actors, you know? So after some wonderful people helped me discover exactly where I was going, I grabbed my friend Megan and we took off for Detroit at 2 in the morning. Our goal was to try to meet him early rather than later in the day.
I didn’t have any expectations. I wasn’t expecting a picture, or an autograph, or anything of the sort. The most I wished for was maybe a glimpse of him and perhaps a conversation. Either way, it was enough to convince myself to actually drive 5 hours to Detroit!
When we got there at 6:30am, we didn’t know that the crew had already come back from filming, so my friend Megan and I stayed in the lobby until 9:30am. We were so tired, so we rented a room there and slept until 12pm and then we just hung out around the hotel. Neither of us had been to Detroit, so it was pretty fascinating. We were outside smoking (she was, I don’t smoke) when a man came out and asked, “Are you waiting for Tom?” and we weren’t sure whether we wanted to admit it or not, but we just caved and told him yes. He then said, “Well he won’t be out until about 5pm. We do night filming.” Intrigued, I asked, “Are you part of the crew?” As it turns out, he was the producer! He was very nice and we talked for awhile. I told him how fascinated I was by this because I currently go to a Film school, majoring in Post-Production to be an editor. He had a lot of comments about Americans that I’m not sure I want to post… but it was funny.
During out waiting we came across a few really nice girls and we talked for awhile and became really good friends!
Anyway, to make a long story short, we waited for Tom all day to no avail. As I said in the previous note, that crafty man had found a way to sneak out of the back. Needless to say I was crushed because that was our last chance to meet him. My friend HAD to leave that night so we weren’t able to stay to try and catch him again. The other girls that we were with wanted to try and meet him again, so we offered up the spare bed in our room, which they took! It was so much fun! They showed me and Megan around Detroit and it was so fascinating. We had a blast sitting in the hotel room watching Tom videos all night until we had to leave. It was an incredibly sad goodbye, but it was not a complete loss! I had made new friends and because of these new friends, I got a note from Tom!
Before I came to Detroit, I had made Tom a couple of CD’s and put them into a customized CD case with a note inside. I gave it to the girls and asked if they would just give it to him for me. They did, and I guess he was really flattered and he wrote me a note! I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to get it in the mail!
However, as soon as I got home from Detroit, I had this really hollow feeling and I knew it wasn’t going to go away unless I went back. So I did. I went to work, came home, showered, and left for another 5 hour drive to Detroit.
Once I got there, I was all by myself, but the producer was outside so we chatted for awhile. We pretty much got eachother’s life stories, haha!
After he left, two other girls came and sad beside me and we started talking. These two girls were so sweet and so funny! We immediately started talking about Tom and that didn’t end until much later. Two other girls from the day before showed up as well and we all sat and waited around while discussing random/funny crap.
Finally, the moment came! We saw him pull up and when he got out, one of the girls asked, “Tom?” He had recognized her from before and came right over to say hello. I’m so envious, he gave her a kiss on the cheek! After they said hello, the following occurred: (Warning… I was extremely nervous and sort of sounded like an idiot.. the conversation isn’t exact, but it’s the best I can remember.)
Me: “Hi Tom! I’m the one who brought the CD’s”
Tom: “Oh, really? Krista, right?” (I almost died when he said my name. I can’t believe he remembered!)
Tom: “Oh, that’s great! I haven’t had a chance to listen to them yet. As soon as I got them I went to bed, and then went straight to work, but I will definitely listen!”
Me: “Awesome! I also wanted to thank you so much for the note you wrote me. I don’t have it, but my friend does and I have yet to get it, but I hear good things about it…”
Tom: “…about the note?”
Tom: *laughs* “Well it’s nothing miraculous!”
And the conversation continues for a bit until he decides to take pictures with us. When it comes to my turn he puts his arms around me and I just hug him around the middle and say as I’m laughing, “I’m just going to hug you really close like this, okay?” He laughed in return and said, “Yeah!” and he wrapped his arms really tight around me! I couldn’t believe it was real. So then she took the first picture and said that it was blurry and she wanted to take another, and I can’t believe I said this out loud, but I said, “That’s okay, I don’t mind standing here forever” and Tom laughed his “Ehehehe” laugh, which shook my whole body. I heard the laugh in person! Ahh!
So after we took the 2nd picture I showed him the picture and asked, “What do you think?” He took a moment to inspect it and replied, “Looks good to me!” So then we finished with the pictures and then some of us gave him letters that we wrote and he left for the lobby.
Oh, did I mention that while we waited for Tom I had somehow managed to lock my keys in the car? *Facepalm* So I went into the lobby shortly after him to ask the hotel if they knew of any locksmiths that could help me out. As she went to go find a phonebook, I saw Tom getting coffee and it was so cool to see him for a brief moment just being normal. Not signing any autographs or taking pictures. Just ordering coffee like a normal guy. I know that sounds weird, but it made me smile to see him like that, haha.
Finally, after another two hours of waiting for the locksmith to arrive, I was on my way and stopped at one of my new friend’s houses to pick up my note from Tom. I stayed awhile and told her of my adventure and then finally left for home and now here I am, only hours after one of the best moments of my life, still not fully believing that it happened.
Tom is everything that people describe him to be. He’s respectful, humble, kind, funny, and loves to make his fans happy. Now, I’ll be the first one to admit that I think the man is damn sexy, but that’s not why I respect him and that’s not why I was so keen on meeting him. It’s rare to find a person such as Tom, especially with that celebrity status that he has. I just feel so privileged to have gotten this opportunity and see for myself the man that has my complete and utmost respect and admiration. Tom, you are amazing.
So let’s recap…
Gas money: $140
Room price: $50
Locking keys in car: $200
Food: $20 (though I only had 1 sandwich the whole three days)
Hours of sleep in a 72 hour time span: 6
Meeting Tom: Indescribable.
I feel like there’s so much left to say, but I’m exhausted, so I’ll just leave with a final comment: Would I do it again? You bet your ass I would!
